Why Is My Old Car Costing So Much?

August 02, 2017

Sometimes we'll get a phone call from a customer asking why their 20 year old car costs them over $1,000 a year in insurance. What most people don't realize is that older model vehicles have terrible safety ratings. New cars come with incredible features such as blind spot monitoring, lane assist, back-up cameras and more. You're lucky if you can even get airbags in a 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix.

Another factor is the damage your car can cause to another vehicle. Take this for example: a 2015 Nissan Altima and a 2013 Mazda CX-5 get into a fender bender. There's going to be minimal damage. Now switch out one of those cars for a 1993 Chrysler Imperial and there's going to be a lot more cost for repairs. Vehicles in the 90's were built like tanks and designed to withstand disrepair. Sadly, they weren't designed with safety in mind.

Next time you're thinking of trading in your 2010 Dodge Challenger for a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier, think again! It may end up costing you more in premium than you may think.

And as always, we're here for you no matter what your questions are. We can always quote out several cars for you if you're concerned on what the prices differences will be.
